Tim Cook: Apple will contribute to disaster relief efforts in Malaysia and the Philippines

Malaysia and the Philippines have been hit badly by weather disasters in the past week. In the Philippines, about 375 people have died due to the devastation caused by Typhoon Rai, while tens of thousands of people in various states in Malaysia were displaced due to floods. In Selangor alone, it was reported that 17 people were found dead after floodwaters subside.

Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted many families have lost so much and Apple will be contributing to the relief, recovery, and long-term rebuilding efforts in Malaysia and the Philippines. At the moment, it isn’t clear how much Apple is contributing and which organisation they would be working with.

Early last week, Apple has also pledged donations to support relief efforts in several states in the United States that were affected by tornadoes. In October, Apple has also pledged donations to support disaster relief efforts in China’s northern province of Shanxi.

In Malaysia, netizens have criticised the government for its slow action in coordinating the relief efforts. Malaysians and several organisations have stepped in to provide aid and rescue efforts to assist stranded victims.

After one of Mydin stores was broken into, Managing Director of Mydin, Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin, even forgave looters as they were in a desperate situation and they did what they had to do to survive. In addition, he has also arranged for more supplies to be distributed to the affected victims.

Youth and Sports Minister Dato Seri Ahmad Faizal was recently slammed for organising a “launch event” for his ministry’s relief effort. Meanwhile, the Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun was also criticised online over an alleged grand dinner in conjunction with the flood relief efforts.
