Here are the coolest announcements from The Game Awards 2021

The Game Awards 2021, which streamed live online yesterday, awarded the best games that came out this year—including action-adventure game It Takes Two winning Game of the Year. But together with the awards, the event is also a popular platform to premiere up-and-coming games and game-based movies. So, what were the most exciting announcements to come out from it?

The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 experience

The Matrix stars, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss made an appearance at The Game Awards (not in person, though) to bring the viewers another clip of the upcoming The Matrix Resurrections film. But they also showed a clip of The Matrix Awakens—a gaming “experience” by Unreal Engine 5. The demo is now available for you to play on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, or you can watch it in the video above.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman finally gets her own game. The awards’ host and creator, Geoff Keighley, even noted that the announcement is something “no one had in their bingo card”. The teaser is pretty vague, but the voiceover suggested that the superhero might “return home” to the Amazon. The game is also brought to us by Monolith, which gave us games like the F.E.A.R. series. The game doesn’t have an official release date yet, but more information is expected to come in 2022.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League

With a title like that, how could we not be at least a little excited? DC’s Amanda Waller—played by Debra Wilson—made an appearance at the awards show to present the gameplay trailer. And it looks pretty wild, with the team aiming to “attack The Flash”. The game is expected to be released in 2022.

Star Wars Eclipse

Upping the ante for good-looking game trailers is Star Wars Eclipse. Its cinematic trailer teases “the newest adventure in the High Republic era”, and you can also expect to be able to play “multiple playable characters”. The game is created in collaboration with Quantic Dream—which gave is immersive games like Detroit: Become Human and Heavy Rain, so this should be pretty promising. There’s no official word of when the game will be released.

Halo TV series

What? Halo to turn into a TV show? The trailer for the Paramount Plus show was announced at The Game Awards, and it stars Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, Natascha McElhone as Dr. Halsey, and longtime voice Jen Taylor as Cortana. With the success of Arcane, there’s a huge possibility that this show would be just as successful seeing how popular the Halo franchise still is. The show will be available in 2022.

Among Us: VR version

The game slash pop culture phenomenon, Among Us, announced that they will be releasing a virtual reality version of the same in a very short clip. But what I can guess is that immersing yourself as one of the characters in the game will be absolutely terrifying if you’re constantly trying to look out for murderous imposters. No word yet when the VR version will be released, though.

Dune: Spice Wars

Shiro Games announced Dune: Spice Wars, which is said to be a “real-time strategy game with 4X elements” which stands for explore, expand, exploit and exterminate. It won’t be the visually stunning action-adventure game you’re expecting, but for fans of games like Civilization, this might be right up your alley. The game will be on early access in 2022 on Steam.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2

I absolutely loved the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie. It was camp, hilarious, and surprisingly fun. So, I just knew that the sequel’s trailer would promise the same thing, and more. Well, it delivered. We also were blessed with the voice of Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik with a much bigger mustache. Presenting the trailer at The Games Awards were Ben Schwartz who voices Sonic, and Jim Carrey’s insane recorded video—which you can watch here.
