Selangkah: Selangor’s contact tracing app is now an eWallet

Selangor state government’s Selangkah app now has an eWallet that enables contactless payment. The Selangkah Wallet feature was teased earlier this year during the app’s revamp and it is powered by Green Packet’s KiplePay platform.

The Selangkah Wallet was officially introduced in conjunction with RIUH Christmas Tropicola 2021 event which took place last weekend. They offered a RM5 discount voucher for the first 10,000 Selangkah Wallet users during the event.

According to Selangkah, the app has evolved from a contact-tracing application to serve the public to respond better to multidimensional challenges posed by the pandemic. It has helped 170,000 residents with subsidised community testing and more than 362,000 individuals have been quarantined safely with the Remote Quarantine Monitoring feature. The app also offers COVID-19 health screening and you can even book an appointment for your COVID-19 vaccination under Selvax.

Selangkah Chief Executive Officer Tengku Iesta Tengku Alaudin said, “Selangkah is committed to providing a safe and reliable experience for consumers, and the launch of Selangkah Wallet enables us to play a new role in the contactless ecosystem while creating a more secure and effective platform for the community at large. We will keep enhancing our integrated digital platform made for the community, so stay tuned and expect more features and services to be rolled out in the coming months.”

In September 2021, a total of 1.4 million SelangkahIDs have been issued to streamline the state government’s aid, welfare and assistance scheme distributions. Early this year, they have also launched SelangkahBiz to reduce the barrier to entry for micropreneurs in Selangor to accept eWallet and card transactions.

Activating Selangkah Wallet

To get started, make sure you’ve downloaded the latest Selangkah app on the Apple App store, Google Play Store or Huawei App gallery. On the home screen, you can tap on Selangkah Wallet to activate and you will be required to go through an electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) process to verify your identification card or passport. The app will also require you to take a video selfie for 3 seconds.

Once activated, you can start topping up your Selangkah Wallet. By default, it has a maximum wallet size of RM10,000 and you can top up from a minimum of RM20 via online banking or credit/debit card.

At the moment, it appears that you can only use the Selangkah Wallet at participating merchants which include 99 Speedmart and Selcare. According to the app, it will be supported at KK Mart, Hari Hari, Mydin and Burger King.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t support DuitNow QR, Malaysia’s national QR code standard. This means the eWallet is currently limited to merchants that display the Selangkah Wallet QR code. Within the app, you can purchase mobile reloads and pay utility bills covering water, Astro, councils and city hall, and broadband providers. Like most eWallet apps, you can pay by scanning a QR code or allowing the merchant to scan your QR code.

Interestingly, there’s a withdrawal feature where you can cash out your Wallet balance to a local bank account. However, there’s a RM2.00 fee for each withdrawal.
