Is your phone screen not long enough? Boy, do we have a suggestion for you

I can’t think of a circumstance that would make me want an ultra-tall monitor, but I assume it’s pretty good for looking through my Twitter feed. But if this seems intriguing to you, allow me to show you the Elsonic EK-MD088, a monitor with a 420×1920 pixels resolution display.

Based on one small “lifestyle” picture shown Elsonic’s website (and seen above), the monitor is meant to complement your laptop. It basically works as a… longer-than-usual screen for you to scroll through your social media feed. Its product page specifically highlights web browsing, Twitter, and browser games.

Granted, it would theoretically be great for keeping either your social media feed or chat apps like Telegram and iMessage open on the side. But that’s what my regular non-tall phone is for…

The portable monitor has an 8.8-inch display and a 420×1920 resolution which gives the panel an aspect ratio of 7:32. Its pixel density is 223.3 pixels per inch. The monitor’s base is approximately 3.07 × 0.83 inches, and the entire thing is 9.76 inches tall, including the edges. It weighs 198 grams.

It charges via USB-C but can’t output video through the port. The monitor relies on mini HDMI for its video signal instead, which isn’t very practical seeing that most devices use USB-C anyway—why couldn’t the charging port also output video?

Elsonic’s listing has no information about color capabilities but says that the screen has a standard refresh rate of 60 Hz and a typical brightness of 300 nits. The screen has two buttons on the side that let you pick between six brightness settings.

Elsonic is a sub-brand of Japanese company Nojima. It started off with LED bulbs but now makes TVs and other tech products—including this wild ass monitor.

The EK-MD088 is expected to release in early February and it will cost you JPY 14,800 (RM550.23)—but this doesn’t include any shopping fees. You’d have to wait until then if you really want it, but… again… I really don’t know what for.
