The Dimensity 9000 is MediaTek’s most powerful chip yet, first to use 4nm process

MediaTek, long considered the also-ran in the mobile processor space, has dropped their latest and greatest system-on-chip during the MediaTek Summit, the Dimensity 9000. Not only is it the most powerful piece of silicon that MediaTek have released, but it’s also the first to be built on the new 4nm process by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC).

Incidentally, the new Dimensity 9000 processor is the first to come with Arm’s new core designs too. Powered by a Cortex-X2 prime CPU core running at 3.05GHz, three Cortex-A719 big cores clocked at 2.85GHz and four more Coretex-A510 1.8GHz efficiency cores, it comes with 8MB of L3 cache and 6MB of system-level cache. It’s also the first to utilise Arm’s new v9 architecture which promises some of the biggest jumps in performance we’ve seen on a mobile chip in a decade. The Dimensity 9000 will be able to use LPDDR5X RAM with speeds of up to 7500Mbps.

While there’s no benchmarks of the new Dimensity 9000 just yet, we do know from Arm that thanks to the new Arm v9 designs, we can expect roughly 30-35% increase in performance and efficiency when compared to processors built on the older Arm v8.2 architecture. In other parts of the Dimensity 9000, MediaTek are also using Arm’s new Mali-G710, a 10-core GPU alongside Mediatek’s own APU with 6-cores for AI processing. According to MediaTek, the new GPU will come with a raytracing SDK, meaning game developers can leverage this to bring better graphics to mobile games in the near future.

There’s a new 18-bit Imagiq Gen 7 image signal processor too, supposedly able to capture up to 320MP images as well as process 9 gigapixels of data per second. As for connectivity it has support for Bluetooth 5.3, WiFi 6E and an onboard 5G modem that curiously only supports sub-6GHz 5G. Instead, it has 3GPP Release-16 technology built into the chip, which would amplify the sub-GHz signal for better speeds. MediaTek have also included its 5G UltraSave 2.0 enhancement suite to help save power and battery life while on 5G.

We should be seeing Qualcomm’s own flagship processors with Arm v9 architecture soon. Their own Snapdragon Tech Summit will be happening very soon, and many expect the launch of the Snapdragon 898 along with its own host of improvements over the current Snapdragon 888 SoC. Meanwhile, Samsung are also geared to reveal the Exynos 2200 processor very soon, with the headline there potentially being the massive graphics performance gains thanks to help from AMD.
