PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) and Celcom have announced a collaboration with the aim to unlock a seamless mobility experience and co-create sustainable value for Malaysian communities. Utilising Celcom’s 4G LTE connectivity and Internet-of-Things (IoT) platforms, the collaboration will accelerate PLUS’ aspiration to become the smart highway of the future.

The partnership will kick off the development of a Smart Fleet Management Solution which tracks vehicles, monitor drivers’ safety and health, and manage vehicle maintenance. The solution aims at improving the efficiency and productivity of vehicle fleets and enhancing the safety of highway communities. The Smart Fleet Management Solution will be offered exclusively to PLUSTrack members. The solution would greatly benefit companies with a large fleet of vans and lorries as drivers are tracked in real-time and it encourages them to drive safely according to the planned route while minimising unnecessary downtime.

According to Celcom CEO Idham Nawawi, Celcom’s collaboration with PLUS signifies Celcom’s continuous determination to drive the nation’s IR4.0 agenda as a digital enabler in driving IoT adoption for Malaysian industries. He said, “We are honoured with PLUS’s recognition in our technological capacity, and we are committed to elevating the industry’s infrastructure and operations with future-proof solutions, including 5G solutions.”

PLUS Managing Director Datuk Azman Ismail said “As a critical national asset, PLUS is consistently exploring opportunities to unlock seamless connectivity that exist, which will enable us to positively impact the entire socioeconomic environment for the betterment of our customers. Our partnership with Celcom today provides a stronger platform for us to prepare the nation towards embracing the highway of the future, today.”

Datuk Azman added that the collaboration marks the continuation of PLUS’ journey to connect people and businesses through strategic collaborations embarking on emerging technologies such as 5G applications. This may cover areas concerning WiFi Connectivity, safety, security, assisted driving and autonomous vehicle in the future.

Both PLUS and Celcom will also work towards developing cross products and services such as mobile connectivity offering for PLUSTrack members and business partners at PLUS’ Rest and Service Area (RSA). These offerings and loyalty programmes for both PLUSMiles and Celcom rewards platform will be made available through the PLUS App (Apple App Store, Google Play Store) and Celcom Life App (Apple App Store, Google Play Store).

On 31st October, PLUS deployed RFID and Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) toll payment system along the Hutan Kampung – Sungai Dua stretch of the PLUS highway. The enhanced RFID system allows a higher pass-through speed at 30 km/h which is higher than SmartTAG’s recommended speed of 20 km/h. RFID and ANPR is seen as the first step towards a barrier-less, multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) highway experience in the future.
