Google Pixel 6 has a slow fingerprint sensor, but here’s what you can do to speed it up

We might not be able to officially purchase the Pixel phones in Malaysia yet, but it’s not too much of a let-down with the Pixel 6 phones reportedly having a slower fingerprint sensor compared to other phones. However, Google has defended its flaw, saying it’s “part of its efforts to provide increased security”.

According to Twitter user @ianxcom1, they will more often than not need to touch the Pixel 6’s fingerprint sensor 6 or 7 times before the phone asks for their PIN. Other users on Twitter replied to his complaint, vouching that they also had similar experiences.

Google responded, saying that they were sorry and added that its fingerprint sensor “utilises enhanced security algorithms”. The added protections “can take longer to verify or require more direct contact with the sensor”, and they suggest that the users try troubleshooting.

The company’s suggestion of troubleshooting to try and fix the issue might be a little basic, but re-enrolling your fingerprints could possibly speed up the unlocking process. Make sure that your fingers are clean of things like sweat or oil and that you’re allowing the sensor to fully scan the entire tip of your digits.

If this still doesn’t help speed up your fingerprint sensor, you’re able to turn on “increased touch sensitivity” on your Pixel 6. you could do so by looking for the option under Display Settings. The feature is described in the phone as “improving touch response when using the phone with a screen protector”.

Apple iPhones now mostly use Face ID instead of Touch ID, which might help unlock your phone quicker but it makes unlocking iPhones with masks a lot harder. This is why having fingerprint sensors for new phones like the Pixel 6 can be a perk, but users will have to deal with the possibility of a slower sensor than other phones with fingerprint sensors like the Samsung Galaxy S21.
