Police nabbed snatch thieves that had been posing as delivery riders

Sentul district police chief Assistant Commissioner Beh Eng Lai stated that four suspects have been detained for posing as food delivery riders to carry out snatch crimes. The suspects were detained between 23 October and 28 October.

The suspects, who are reported to belong to a gang called Gang Ashmer, had been active over the last five months in the Sentul district. The four members would disguise themselves as food delivery riders to blend in before snatching items from victims.

“They would normally move in pairs, one to tail the victim and another one as ‘striker’. Items snatched such as gold chains would be sold and the profits shared among the gang members,” said the Assistant Commissioner.

According to the photos seen at the press conference at Sentul district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, it appears that the snatch thieves disguised themselves as GrabFood riders. The suspects snatch items like gold chains, to be sold for profit and shared amongst the other members.

The loot that the police detained included 36 gold chains, food delivery bags, and mobile phones—worth around RM50,000 in total. The gang reportedly had pulled off at least 30 cases before being caught.

“With the arrests, we believe we have solved 20 theft cases and 10 snatch thefts in the district,” continued the Assistant Commissioner.

While 30 of the cases have been reportedly solved, police advise those who have become victims and have information on such activities to contact the Sentul police district police headquarters operation room at 03-40482206.

There is also a previous case where the delivery riders were used by loan sharks to harass their borrowers into paying up. They did it by making a lot of orders via food delivery platforms and delivering them to their borrowers.
