‘Real’ Buzz Lightyear going to infinity and beyond in new Disney trailer

We know that Disney is no stranger to milking its content to its last breath, so the new trailer for Lightyear is not a huge surprise. The trailer teases an upcoming sci-fi action-adventure feature film presenting the origin story of Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise.

If you’re familiar with Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story franchise, you’d definitely recognise Buzz Lightyear as the toy space ranger friend of Woody, the toy cowboy. But unlike the rest of the movies in the universe, this movie will tell the story of the “real” Buzz Lightyear—who exists in the Toy Story universe and inspired the toy.

At first, it did sound like a cash grab from Disney. But even if it is, it looks extremely exciting. The visuals from the teaser include the famous “Lightyear” suit from the Toy Story movies, the rockets, and the planets. It also looks like it would be a heck-of-an-adventure movie, and I can’t wait to see more of it.

The titular Lightyear is voiced by Chris Evans, who played Captain America in the Marvel films—also owned by Disney. It’s an interesting choice to replace Tim Allen, who voiced the character in all of the Toy Story movies.

Lightyear will be released in theatres on 17 June 2022. There’s no word on if the film will eventually be released on Disney+ or Disney+ Hotstar, but it might only be released on their streaming platform after a while like what they are doing for their other feature films like Shang-Chi.
