This Malaysian got his photo featured on Apple’s Instagram page. Here’s how you can do it too

Back in July, photographer Badrul Akram Badaruddin posted a picture featuring the right eye of his eldest son, Luth Fateh Badrul Akram. This week, it was posted on Apple’s official Instagram page, which now has 26.6 million followers.

The photo was taken with Badrul’s iPhone 12 Pro Max in his car at around 6pm and was dramatically lit by the hot Malaysian sun. Its caption started with “Worlds change when eyes meet” and contained the hashtags #ShotoniPhone and #ShotoniPhoneProMax.

A few months later, Apple contacted Badrul, asking for details and telling him that his photo is being considered by their panel of judges. Apple actually contacted him two years ago for the campaign, but his submission was rejected.

When the photo was finally posted, Badrul was over the moon. He made an appreciation post on Instagram to address the shocking news and said “Photography taught me a lot about our gratitude for every life and natural beauty that God has given.” Apple captioned the photo “Simple moments can be profound” and also included a short comment from the photographer. “The sunlight appeared on my son’s face and highlighted the beauty of his eyes. I made sure I didn’t miss the moment. From the first time he opened his eyes and our eyes met, it totally changed my perspective of the world.”

This is not the first time a Malaysian photographer has been featured on Apple’s Instagram page, as Dinie A. also got selected back in 2019.

How to get your photo featured by Apple

‘Shot on iPhone’ is a worldwide campaign by Apple, challenging iPhone users to submit their best work on social media, with the goal of being selected and featured on billboards, the Apple store, and on Apple’s social pages. They even had a Night Mode challenge and collaborated with celebrities like Lady Gaga for the campaign,

If you want to get your photo featured by Apple, you can enter the #ShotOniPhone challenge and hope that Apple considers your picture.

To submit, you can post your picture on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #ShotoniPhone. Make sure your account is public so that Apple can view your image. You can also submit more than one, and even tag older photos taken on an iPhone.

If Apple likes your submission, they will reach out to you with their official Instagram account and provide a link for you to submit the full resolution image, as well as information about the shot.

In March of this year, photographer Adam Marsh shared his experience of submitting his photos to being featured in Apple’s Shot on iPhone campaign.

It might take a couple months to get your photo reviewed, as it took them three months to review Badrul’s picture and six months to review Dinie’s picture.

The good news is that Apple seems to post submissions almost every day on Instagram, so all you have to do is submit your best photo and hope for the best!
