Sabah to allow interstate travel from 1 November, inter-district travel permitted from 14 October

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has announced that interstate travel restrictions for Sabah will be lifted from 1st November. The Prime Minister had earlier lifted the interstate travel ban effective 11th October 2021 but the state government decided to delay its reopening as less than 70% of its adult population have been fully vaccinated. Sabah currently has the lowest vaccination rate in the country with only 66% of adults in the state are fully vaccinated.

However, interdistrict travel is permitted starting tomorrow 14th October 2021 as the state government is satisfied that over 70% of adults have received at least one dose.

The relaxation of restrictions is only for fully vaccinated adults and for teens aged 12 to 18 years old who are partially vaccinated. Children below 12 years old are also eligible to travel if they are accompanied by fully vaccinated parents.

When Sabah’s state borders reopen for tourism and social visits on 1st November, the state authority requires all travellers to show a negative RTK-Ag or RT-PCR COVID-19 test result three days before they travel.

At the moment, 90.6% of total adults in the country have been fully vaccinated. All states except for Kelantan and Sabah have fully vaccinated at least 80% of their adult population.

Although Sarawak allows interstate travel since Monday, they have imposed additional requirements for travellers. Visitors must submit an application via EnterSarawak and produce proof of vaccination status as well as a negative COVID-19 test result.

Interstate travel is currently allowed for fully vaccinated individuals and all transportation providers are responsible to ensure all passengers are fully vaccinated before boarding. Individuals that can’t get vaccinated due to health reasons may be allowed to travel but they must provide a vaccine exemption certificate.
