Nokia G50: Huge 6.82″ display, 5,000mAh battery and it supports 5G

Nokia’s still around in case you haven’t heard, and they’ve just launched a new smartphone in a few global regions. However, don’t expect this to be a flagship device rivalling the likes of the iPhone 13; instead what we have is a fairly solid entry-to-mid-range smartphone: the Nokia G50.

Perhaps the literal biggest feature about the device is the screen size. Coming in at 6.82-inches, the LCD display may not be the best though as it has just a 720p+ resolution. You’ll get up to 450nits of brightness from the screen and a 70% coverage of the NTSC colour gamut.

Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 system-on-chip, and is mated to either 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage, or 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You’ll also be able to add expandable storage via a microSD card slot too for up to 512GB more. It comes with Android 11 out of the box and Nokia are promising up to 2 years of software updates for the G50.

As for the cameras, you’ll find a triple-camera setup on the rear with a 48MP main shooter. That gets flanked by a 5MP ultrawide lens as well as a 2MP depth sensor. The front of the Nokia G50 meanwhile has an 8MP camera for all your selfie needs. Furthermore, keeping the lights on is a 5,000mAh battery, with a fairly decent 18W fast charging via USB-C, compared to the 10W charging on the Nokia G20, its predecessor. HMD Global, the people behind the Nokia brand, rate the device for 2 days of use before needing to find a wall socket again.

Other features of note include support for 5G, NFC, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, as well as a 3.5mm audio jack. There’s a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on the power button as well as an additional dedicated Google key. The Nokia G50 comes in two colourways: Ocean Blue and Midnight Sun.

Pricing and availability

The Nokia G50 may have two different configurations, but so far only the model with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage is available for pre-order on the Nokia US website and ships on the 30th of Sept onwards. That model costs USD299 (~RM1,250.27), though there’s no word on local pricing and availability just yet.
