Apple is doing “everything” to hunt down leakers, says Tim Cook

A leaked memo from Tim Cook to Apple employees reveal that the company is doing “everything” in ther power “to identify those who leaked” confidential information regarding product IP or the details of a confidential meeting. He also noted that “people who leak confidential information do not belong” at Apple.

You can read the full email here, but it basically expressed Cook’s “frustration” regarding “contents of the meeting” being leaked to reporters. The meeting he was referring to was a “global employee meeting” Apple had about their new product line-up—as well as their “values driven work around climate change, racial equity, and privacy”.

“I want you to know that I share your frustration. These opportunities to connect as a team are really important. But they only work if we can trust that the content will stay within Apple. I want to reassure you that we are doing everything in our power to identify those who leaked,” wrote Cook.

The CEO of Apple continued his email, saying that the company does not tolerate disclosures of confidential information. He also wrote that he knows the leakers constitute a small number of people, and that those who leak “do not belong here”.

There has been quite a number of leaks before Apple’s keynote on 14 September. Renders of the iPhone 13 were leaked in June, and size details of the Apple Watch 7 were leaked in late August—amongst others.

Apple has previously stated that they hate leaks because they can affect accessory manufacturers. These companies could, for example, create accessories that don’t fit the final version of the product, all because they received the information from leaks.
