No OnePlus 9T this year, says CEO Pete Lau

It’s only been a number of days since the launch of the Xiaomi 11T and 11T Pro, but rival smartphone maker OnePlus have revealed that they won’t be releasing their own T-series devices this year. This would be the first time since 2016 that OnePlus have not refreshed their flagship device with a T-series version.

According to an interview with The Verge, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau not only revealed that OnePlus will not be launching the OnePlus 9T, but next year’s OnePlus 10 will be running on a new operating system too. This new operating system will be based on the unification of their own OxygenOS and Oppo’s ColorOS. This follows the earlier announcement that they’ll be merging the two Android-based operating systems.

Lau didn’t reveal if they’ll be keeping the OxygenOS moniker though he did say that OnePlus and Oppo will continue to use their own branding for their devices as well as have their own unique feature set. He described their new operating system as one that’s ‘fast and smooth’ and ‘clean and lightweight like OxygenOS while also being as reliable, smart and feature-rich like Oppo’s ColorOS. Older OnePlus devices that are still scheduled to get updates will receive this new OS too.

It’s a shame that we won’t be seeing the OnePlus 9T lineup this year, as historically OnePlus’ T-lineup of devices tend to bring a number of choice upgrades to their flagship smartphones. The OnePlus 8T for instance had a 120Hz refresh rate, an extra monochrome lens, bigger battery and faster charging compared to the original OnePlus 8.

As for whether this completely changes OnePlus’ release schedule from now on remains to be seen, though there’s also the chance that it’s merely a short break for OnePlus to focus on their integration with Oppo.
