iOS 14.7.1 caused “No Service” issues for some iPhone users

While Apple users patiently wait for iOS 15 to make its debut, they’ll have to make do with iOS 14 for the time being. A few weeks ago iOS 14.7.1 was released to fix an Apple Watch-related problem but it appears to have a new bug that caused some iPhone users to have a “No Service” issue.

Apple does have a dedicated support page to address issues relating to mobile connectivity. Some of the tips provided include switching cellular data on or off, rebooting their iPhone, taking out the SIM, resetting network settings, and updating their device. Unfortunately, these tips were not helpful for several users.

Some users were completely unable to get a hold of the mobile signal and all they got was the “No Service” status. One Twitter user noted that the “Cellular” section on his phone, which was meant to display carrier-related information, was blank. Other users reported that their signals became relatively weaker after the update, alongside increased call drops.

Several iPhone models were affected after the update which includes the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. Even iPhone 12 users were not spared either, based on comments of 9to5Mac’s post.

One user even had to resort to wiping their iPhone 12 Pro and restoring it to resolve the service issue but faced a new problem. They discovered that calls were unstable, and their phone began to overheat, drain battery and shut down. Ultimately the user had their iPhone, as well as their SIM, replaced.

It is said that Apple is currently working on releasing a new iOS 14.8 update and hopefully that will address the mobile signal issue for affected users. From the looks of it, the complaints are mostly from users outside of Malaysia. It could be limited to certain network bands or telcos. At the moment, we didn’t see major complaints from Malaysian iPhone users who have updated their devices to iOS 14.7.1. A couple of us in the SoyaCincau team have updated their iPhone to the latest version and so far there are no issues after updating.
