Xiaomi sold more smartphones than Samsung for the first time ever

According to Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi became the top smartphone brand in terms of sales in June 2021, beating out Samsung and Apple. Xiaomi was also the fastest growing brand month-to-month in June. Being the 2nd biggest smartphone brand globally in Q2 of this year, it seems like they’re just going to keep rising.

In the chart above, also provided by Counterpoint Research, you can see how Xiaomi is leading with with a 17.1% sales share, compared to Samsung’s 15.7% and Apple’s 14.3%. Samsung’s sales have been declining in the past few months, which also contributed to Xiaomi’s overtake.

Samsung’s smartphone business has been suffering mostly due to the global chip shortage. They even set out to perform a review of their mobile business to assess what issues need to be addressed. This review came without warning and could turn into a form of audit in their mobile sector.

It is unclear how the rankings will change in the next couple months, as global situations rapidly change and certain product releases can drastically change a company’s market share. Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event is coming very soon, and things may change as Samsung address its chip shortage issues.

Elaborating further about Xiaomi’s rise to the top, Research Director Tarun Pathak explained, “Ever since the decline of Huawei commenced, Xiaomi has been making consistent and aggressive efforts to fill the gap created by this decline. The OEM has been expanding in Huawei’s and Honor’s legacy markets like China, Europe, Middle East and Africa. In June, Xiaomi was further helped by China, Europe and India’s recovery and Samsung’s decline due to supply constraints.”

Analysis of nation’s sales can explain Xiaomi’s steady growth, as China’s smartphone market grew 16% in June month-to-month. Even though Vivo and Oppo still lead China’s market, Xiaomi is still the fastest growing OEM and will likely dominate the nationwide market soon, especially with their Redmi series.
