University student becomes the only Malaysian recipient of this Google scholarship

Managing Director of Google Malaysia, Marc Woo, announces that a Malaysian university student has received a Generation Google Scholarship crafted for women in computer science. The student, Evelyn Chen, is also “the only Malaysian recipient”.

“Congrats Evelyn for being the only Malaysian recipient of Generation Google Scholarship crafted for women in computer science,” said Woo on his LinkedIn.

The Generation Google Scholarship was established by Google to “help aspiring students pursuing computer science degrees excel in technology and and become leaders in the field”. They are awarded based on their commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, demonstrated leadership, and academic performance.

Applications were open from 1 March to 29 March of this year, to students who meet the minimum qualifications. The Scholarship program was open for applicants around the world, including Europe, Middle East, Africa, U.S., Canada, Ireland, and the Asia Pacific.

Google encourages women interested in computer science to apply. Applicants had to send responses to two short essay questions, complete a “Google Online Challenge”, amongst other things. The winners receive USD 1,000 (RM4,228) for their 2021-2022 school year.

“I believe that stereotypes are widespread against women in tech (and) I want to prove this does not hold true and one ought to be adequately and fairly recognized for their character and contributions,” said Chen.

Chen is currently a student at Taylor’s University, taking Computer Science as a Bachelor’s Degree. She joins a large group of recepients of the same Scholarship, she’s the only one representing Malaysia according to the list.

“These students have demonstrated a passion for technology, academic excellence, and have proven themselves as exceptional leaders and role models. They will join a community of over 2,600 Google scholarship recipients. We can’t wait to see how these students continue to shape the future of computer science, gaming, and technology,” said Google.
