The seventh-generation Mercedes-AMG SL roadster has been teased by the German carmaker. While the car will only be fully launched later this year, Mercedes-Benz has released pictures of the interior and the centerpiece of its infotainment system is a flip-up touchscreen dashboard.
Mercedes says that the flip-up design is part of their plan to reduce glare on the screen, which could be an issue when you factor in the fact that the AMG SL is a convertible. It features a portrait-oriented 11.9-inch touchscreen display and runs on their own MBUX infotainment system. The instrument display meanwhile is a 12.3-inch digital display that’s been integrated into what they call a ‘high-tech visor’, also part of their goal to reduce glare from sunlight.
Another big feature of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL is the 2+2 seat layout. Assuming Mercedes sticks with the rear seats in the full launch configuration, this would be only the second AMG SL to feature rear seats. The only other time you could get rear seats in it was the R129 generation of AMG SL roadsters, and even then it was only in certain configurations. Seeing as Mercedes is calling it a 2+2 seat layout, you’ll probably not get the most leg room in the rear, but it’s still an exciting feature for those looking to daily drive it. There will also be multiple seat options available, such as microsuede or leather upholstery.
Then there’s also the whole ‘hyperanalog’ design philosophy that Mercedes are following with the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL. It sounds like something out of a sci-fi novel, but it’s actually refers to how they combined old-school analog shapes with digital elements. They specifically highlighted using the original 300SL and the current AMG GT as inspirations for their design.
There hasn’t been much word on the engine specifications, but it’s widely expected to have multiple models with either their inline-six or twin-turbo V8 engines. Mercedes are also likely to have a variant with a plug-in hybrid setup too. You’ll have to wait a little while longer though for the full details, as they will only fully unveil the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL roadster later this year.
