Prime Minister Tan Sri Dato Muhyiddin Yassin has appointed Dato Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. Ismail Sabri will continue to hold his current portfolio of Minister of Defence.
According to the statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the appointment will help the Prime Minister with the country’s administration matters and fulfil the needs of the people during the health and economic crisis. In addition, Dato Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussien has been appointed Senior Minister while maintaining his Minister of Foreign affairs portfolio.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has been informed about the two appointments and it will take into effect immediately. The statement added that the appointment is aimed at strengthening the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure that the coalition among parties is strengthened.
The appointment was announced ahead of the reopening of Parliament on 26 July. Besides Hishammuddin, the other three Senior Ministers are Azmin Ali, Fadillah Yusof and Mohd Radzi Jidin.
