I’m usually one of the first people to want to try something new, but for some reason I never gotten round to trying any form of kombucha until the folks at BoochPlease! reached out to me. It was purely because of the reaction TikTok personality Brittany Broski made when she recorded a video of herself trying some—and it wasn’t a great reaction.
Malaysian kombucha makers BoochPlease! sent us a couple cases of their collection, containing six different flavours. So when opportunity knocked, I urged a few others at SoyaCincau to try some with me.
What is kombucha?
Kombucha a fermented tea drink made by adding yeast and a culture of bacteria to some tea, sugar, and sometimes fruit puree and herbs. The mixture of yeast and bacteria turns to something called a SCOBY, or Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast.
The SCOBY can look like something from an alien-based horror flick. It’s snotty, gelatinous and can grow to a hefty size, providing effervescence and tang to the kombucha.
The main health benefit for kombucha is that it has probiotics for gut health. It’s also got antioxidants to boost immunity, B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, and B12, to be specific) for hair, skin and nail health, and if you’re used to soda you can drink kombucha as a healthier alternative with less sugar.
In our video, we tried the different kombucha flavours and rated them from good to not-so-good. But what I took away from it was that I shouldn’t have been so afraid of tasting it, no thanks to TikTok.
Kombucha is actually delicious and a great alternative to a sugary soda drink. Sure, it might not smell as great as it tastes but I can argue that durian is also stinky until consumed.
Special thanks to BoochPlease! for giving us the opportunity to open our minds to kombucha. A bottle of their kombucha costs RM12. You can check out their Facebook and Instagram, and you can order their kombucha here.
