In case your iPhone 12 drops in a canal, you can build a “MagSafe fishing rod” to pull it out

Well, now I know that there’s a kind of easy way to fish an iPhone 12 out from the water. Some people in Berlin managed to fish for an iPhone 12 Pro by improvising with a “MagSafe” fishing rod.

Twitter user and app developer Frederik Riedel tweeted his experience wading through a muddy canal when his friend dropped his iPhone 12 Pro in it. The phone “disappeared” in the mud—but while they were trying to find it, they instead found a different device.

“A friend of mine dropped his iPhone 12 Pro in the canal in Berlin. It disappeared in the mud. He waded through the 3 feet deep water. No way to find it. But he found a Nintendo Switch instead,” tweeted Riedel.

However, in his next tweet, Riedel said that they “built a magnetic fishing rod” and caught their lost iPhone 12 Pro. They improvised a fishing rod with a magnet at the end of the line and dropped it in the canal–and by golly, the magnet managed to snag their phone because of its MagSafe capabilities.

As for the Nintendo Switch that they found, it was sadly not functional anymore. But it makes sense seeing that we don’t know how long that device was underwater—and it also isn’t waterproof at all.

It’s nice to know that something like this is possible if you’re in deep water, so to speak. The iPhone 12 has a rating of IP68—which means that it can be submerged into water up to a maximum depth of six meters for up to 30 minutes. Depending on how fast you can whip up a fishing rod with a magnet, I’d say don’t give up hope in finding your phone as long as you have a MagSafe-supported iPhone.
