Besides iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5, Apple is expected to release watchOS 7.4 next week. Not only it allows users to unlock their Face ID enabled iPhone with their watch, the update also enables the ECG feature (electrocardiogram) in two more countries – Australia and Vietnam.
Since ECG is considered as a medical feature, it has to be approved by local medical authorities. It was reported that the ECG feature has been approved by the Australian government’s Therapeutic Goods Administration last month. Disappointingly, Malaysia isn’t included yet and we would probably have to wait a while more for future updates.
As reported in February, the Apple ECG feature is already listed as a Registered Medical Device by the Medical Device Authority of Malaysia. This is seen as a green light by Malaysian authorities and the registration is valid until 31st January 2026.
With the ECG feature, you will be able to get more data for heart monitoring as it records the timing and strength of the electrical signals that make the heart beat. To get an ECG reading, you’ll have to rest your arms on a table or on your lap, and hold your finger on the digital crown.
The process takes 30 seconds and the results will be displayed. The recorded information is stored in your Health app which you can share with your doctor. You can learn more about Apple’s ECG feature here.
The ECG feature is available on the Apple Watch Series 4, Series 5 and Series 6. Take note that the new affordable Apple Watch SE doesn’t support ECG.
