Is Clubhouse hit by a massive user data breach?

Recently, there has been reports of huge platforms with leaked personal user data. Joining Facebook and LinkedIn, Clubhouse was reported by Cybernews to have had a massive leak of 1.3 million scraped Clubhouse user records on a hacker forum.

Here’s what the data leak allegedly revealed:

  • User ID
  • Name
  • Photo URL
  • Username
  • Twitter handle
  • Instagram handle
  • Number of followers
  • Number of people followed by the user
  • Account creation date
  • Invited by user profile name

Below is an example of the leaked data:

However, Clubhouse tweeted that the report was “misleading and false” as their platform has not been breached or hacked. They insist that the data advertised in the hacker forum is “all public profile information” in which “anyone can access” through their app or API.

Looking through the type of data leaked, there isn’t any super personal data like email or phone numbers. It does, however, have social media handle and the amount of followers a user has—something that could be used against Clubhouse users.

According to Cybernews, their investigation on the Clubhouse leak is “still going”. They have “sent some follow up questions regarding their API policy” and is awaiting a response.

Just earlier this month, Linkedin was also a victim of a data breach with data of allegedly over 500 million Linked profiles being exposed and put on sale. The data included LinkedIn IDs, Full names, email addresses, phone numbers, genders, profiles links, links to other social media profiles, professional titles and other work related data.

Facebook was also reported to have a leaked database containing data from 533,000,000 Facebook users. In the same breach, over 11 million Malaysian accounts (exactly 11,675,894 Malaysians) had their data leaked.
