OnePlus 9 series: Everything you need to know

The OnePlus 9 series has just been announced! As widely expected, the series comes with a newly-minted Hasselblad partnership, which means that OnePlus is clearly focusing a lot of its efforts on the cameras of the latest flagship range. This is something that CEO Pete Lau made a point of during his keynote address, noting that camera improvements were the most requested by users in recent years.

There are two models that are now official: the OnePlus 9 and the higher-end OnePlus 9 Pro. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about the brand new OnePlus 9 series.

Price and availability

Three colours are available for the OnePlus 9 Pro: Morning Mist, Pine Green, and Stellar Black. For the standard OnePlus 9, options include Winter Mist, Astral Black, and Arctic Sky.

OnePlus 9 Pro

The OnePlus 9 Pro runs on the latest and greatest from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 888. That’s mated to up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and you get options of up to 256GB of UFS3.1 storage.

Meanwhile, a mid-sized—by today’s standards—4,500mAh battery sits under the hood, and you can fast-charge the device via USB-C at 65W with Warp Charge 65T. For wireless charging, you’ll get impressive speeds of up to 50W. A full charge via USB-C, according to OnePlus, will take just 29 minutes. A full wireless charge, meanwhile, will take just 43 minutes.

Up front, it’s a 6.7″ Fluid AMOLED display pushing a QHD+ resolution of 1440×3216 pixels, along with a high refresh rate of 120Hz (LTPO panel). The display supports a max brightness of 1300 nits, while it also comes with HDR10+ certification. Meanwhile, a hole-punch cutout on the top-left corner of the display houses a 16MP selfie shooter.

Move around to the back, and you have the star of OnePlus’ latest device: the new Hasselblad-branded cameras. It’s a quad-camera setup on the back of the OnePlus 9 Pro, and you’re looking at a 48MP main shooter with a Sony IMX789 sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide camera with an IMX766 sensor, as well as a 2MP monochrome camera and a 8MP telephoto lens.

Photos will also automatically be plastered with a OnePlus x Hasselblad watermark—although you can probably disable this in the settings. Also, you’ll have access to a special Hasselblad Pro mode, which will give you the ability to tweak elements like ISO, aperture, and manual focus. Video recording at 8K 30fps is supported, as well as 4K 120 fps—which is something that OnePlus is particularly proud of.

And of course, the OnePlus 9 Pro comes with 5G support (plus WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2), and this will ship with Android 11 out of the box.

Meanwhile, one of the first differences you’ll notice on the OnePlus is the flat display used. This is also just a Full HD+ display as well, with the 6.55″ screen pushing a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels—although you’ll get a 120Hz refresh rate. You’ll still get a Snapdragon 888 under the hood, along with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS3.1 storage.

Cameras are very similar, too, with identical ultra-wide shooters (50MP) as the Pro. For the main camera, however, the standard OnePlus uses a 48MP Sony IMX689 instead of the Sony IMX789 sensor, with an aperture of f/1.8. It’s a triple-camera setup, which means that you also miss out on the telephoto lens (although you still get the 2MP monochrome camera). Up front, it’s an identical 16MP shooter for selfies within a hole-punch cutout.

Meanwhile, the standard OnePlus 9 uses an identically-sized 4,500mAh battery, and charging speeds of 65W is supported via Warp Charge 65T. On the vanilla OnePlus 9, however, do note that only 15W is supported for wireless charging.

Again, this also ships with Android 11 out of the box, and you’ll also be getting the Snapdragon 888 under the hood. Both the OnePlus 9 and Pro models come with a Warp Charge 65 power adapter out of the box, along with a USB-C to USB-C cable—so you can rest easy there.
