Is this an official photo of the OnePlus Watch?

OnePlus‘ new releases always come with a deluge of pre-release leaks—to the point where you start to understand that it’s all a part of the company’s marketing strategy. Of course, a lot of the hype thus far has surrounded the OnePlus 9 series, scheduled for launch on the 23rd of March 2021. But the company is also planning to launch its first ever smartwatch at the virtual event: the OnePlus Watch.

As expected, we’ve already heard a little bit about the OnePlus Watch, including the fact that it will probably not run on WearOS (contrary to previous rumours). Meanwhile, Pete Lau has confirmed that the smartwatch will be priced at an “affordable price point”, among other vague details:

– A stunning and burdenless design that separates itself from the crowd. To us, no detail is too small;

– Seamless connectivity between OnePlus smartphones, audio peripherals, smartwear devices, and even OnePlus TVs, making smart control over all these devices simple and intuitive;

– A best-in-class experience at an affordable price point, so that more of our global OnePlus users can enjoy our signature burdenless, seamlessly connected experience.

The official “leak”

Now, we’re getting a peek at what might be the most officially, unofficial photo thus far, thanks to Unbox Therapy.

Given past commercial partnerships between the channel and OnePlus—including hosting a live launch of the company’s mid-range OnePlus Nord—this looks like another official leak from OnePlus. Plus, if you look closely, you’ll see that the Tweet was retweeted by the official OnePlus account.

As for the watch, it looks pretty generic, as a whole. You’re getting a round-faced design, along with silicon watch straps that look like they should be easily replaceable, while there are two physical buttons on the side of the watch for navigation. As mentioned earlier, the OnePlus Watch won’t run on Wear OS, which means that we’ll probably see a proprietary operating system from the company—which probably won’t have support for additional apps.

Other rumoured specs include IP68 water resistance, along with an SpO2 sensor and onboard storage. Personally, I’m looking forward to finding out what/if the company plans to integrate ecosystem features that would tie the OnePlus 9, OnePlus Watch, and even the OnePlus Buds together. It seems likely, given Lau’s comments (above), so that’s something to keep an eye out for.
