The next iPhone will not be switching to USB-C

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple has no plans to adopt USB-C on future iPhones. He said that USB-C is “detrimental” to the business’s profitability, and that its waterproof specification is lower than Lightning and MagSafe.

Instead of a USB-C iPhone, Kuo suggests that Apple may jump straight to a port-less iPhone that relies exclusively on wireless charging—specifically, Apple’s MagSafe technology. Apple still controls the MagSafe standard through its MFi program—which means it’ll be able to continue to profit off its licensing fees.

Even so, Kuo notes that Apple doesn’t think MagSafe’s ecosystem can be relied on yet as a sole charging method for the iPhone. Instead, he said that the company will keep using the Lightning port “for the foreseeable future”.

Additionally, Kuo reported Apple won’t be integrating a Touch ID sensor into the power button, either. However, a report from Bloomberg noted that Apple is testing out a Touch ID scanner for the upcoming iPhone 13 series. Kuo also reported that the upcoming iPhones have a smaller notch and faster refresh rate displays—something rumours suggested before.

Wedbush analysts also predicted that the iPhone 13 will finally feature a 1TB storage option. Currently, Apple has only offered 1TB of storage on its most expensive iPad Pros and Mac devices.
