Proper battery charging habits have always eluded me as an individual. I have a hunch that the information is out there if I wanted to search for it, but I’ve remained adamantly ignorant on this subject. I have like a rough idea what I should be doing, but to be honest I still charge my phones overnight and leave my laptop plugged in whenever I can.
That’s why I like it when technology takes these things into their own hands without affecting my usage, kind of like the new charging feature MacRumors discovered in the code in the second beta of macOS 11.3.
Apparently, there will be an improvement to the optimised battery charging feature that debuted on the Mac back in macOS 10.15.5. With this update, your Mac will know to make sure that it is fully charged to 100% at least 3 hours before the start of a scheduled calendar event.
When Apple shipped the optimised battery charging feature, it was made with reducing wear on the device’s battery to improve its lifespan. With this feature, your Mac will delay charging the battery past 80% if it predicts that the user will be connected to power for a long time.
We have seen technology like this on smartphones before from manufacturers like Sony and Asus. Their implementation takes user habit into consideration when charging overnight, preventing the phone from fully charging to 100% until just before the user is about to wake up.
Of course, at this point it’s still a beta feature that someone found by digging through code, so we don’t know if it will make it to the final version of macOS.
