Mi 11: Malaysia’s first Snapdragon 888 phone is launching on 25 February

Earlier this month, Xiaomi announced the Mi 11 for the global market, with the first launch of their latest flagship smartphone being held in China back in December 2020. We can now confirm that the world’s first Snapdragon 888-powered flagship smartphone is now coming to Malaysia, with the launch to happen on the 25th of February 2021 at 8pm.

The launch will be held via Xiaomi Malaysia’s Facebook page, with the company promising “movie magic”—the tagline for its new smartphone. To recap on the global specs of the device, the Mi 11 will come with a 6.81″ “quad-curve” AMOLED display with a WQHD+ resolution of 3200×1440 pixels. There’s also a interesting feature that can scale a 480p image to 1440p, while the Mi 11 will also have HDR10+ and 10-bit colour support.

Like many flagship smartphones these days, the Mi 11 will also push a 120Hz refresh rate, along with an industry-leading 480Hz touch sampling rate. Clearly, Xiaomi has put a lot of work into the display of its flagship smartphone, with the Mi 11 being awarded the best smartphone display award by DisplayMate, with 13 new DisplayMate Records.

Of course, as we mentioned above, this will run on Qualcomm’s latest and greatest: the 5nm Snapdragon 888 processor. This also means that the phone will be 5G ready, and you get 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of UFS3.1 storage—although there is no expandable storage on the global variant.

Meanwhile, camera-specs are impressive as well. The triple-camera rears setup is made up of a 108MP f/1.85 main camera with a large 1/1.33″ sensor, a 7P lens, as well as optical image stabilisation (OIS). Adding to that is a 13MP ultra-wide shooter, along with a 5MP telemacro lens that can capture subjects as close as 3cm. Up front, you’re looking at a 20MP front camera that sits in a hole-punch cutout on the top-left corner of the display.

To sustain the device, the Mi 11 comes with a 4,600mAh battery with 55W wired charging. Impressively, there is also 50W wireless charging, and if you have Qi-compatible devices, the phone also supports 10W reverse wireless charging. According to Xiaomi, the Mi 11 can be fully charged in 45 minutes via USB-C, with wireless charging taking up to 53 minutes for a full charge.

You should be getting a 55W GaN fast-charger in the box, too, if the global variant is anything to go by. In any case, a spokesperson for Xiaomi has made assurances that the previously-reported GMS issue only pertains to the China market, and the global variant will come with Google Mobile Services. This should mean that the Mi 11 will come with Google apps and services when it is launched in Malaysia soon.

How much will this cost?

We don’t yet have official pricing in Malaysia for the Mi 11 just yet, but official pricing in Europe is as follows:

8GB RAM + 128GB storage – EUR 749 (about RM3,662)
8GB RAM + 256GB storage – EUR 799 (about about RM3,907)

For some comparison, its predecessor, the Mi 10 series, was launched in Europe with a starting price of EUR 799 (~RM3,907) with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. In Malaysia, the Mi 10 was launched at RM2,799 for the same 8GB+128GB version. Based on that, an educated guess at the price of the Mi 11 in Malaysia would be somewhere under the RM3,000 mark—which would represent decent value for money for what you’re getting.

So, what do you think? As always, we’ll have the full coverage of the Mi 11 on SoyaCincau.com—so remember to bookmark the site to stay abreast of the latest developments.
