Synology debuts 8-bay DS1821+ NAS, powered by AMD Ryzen

Synology has introduced the DS1821+ an eight-bay NAS that is one of the brand’s first releases to be powered by an AMD Ryzen processor. According to the company, the new NAS is geared towards home networking enthusiasts and small business owners looking for a scalable storage solution.

“As data requirements grow, so do the expectations of our customers for a solution that can meet the ever increasing performance and capacity requirements,” said Julien Chen, Synology Product Manager. “The DS1821+ is specifically designed for customers wanting a versatile storage solution, even in demanding multi-user environments.”

The DS1821+ comes powered by a quad-core 2.2GHz AMD Ryzen processor and is one of the first models in its stable to ditch its usual reliance on Intel. According to Synology, the new processor has doubled the performance compared to the previous generation’s Intel Atom C3538 processor. Apart from that, the DS1821+ is boasted to offers up to 76% faster sequential write speeds with support for 2.3GB/s of sequential reads.

Though the DS1821+ comes with eight drive bays, there is the option to expand to 18 bays by using two DX517 expansion units. In addition, the DS1821+ comes with built-in M.2 SSD cache slots that support for two Synology SNV3400 NVMe SSD cache drives.

The brand said this enables the NAS to provide I/O response speeds that are 20 times faster than hard drives without occupying the front drive bay. Around the back, the DS1821+ has four Gigabit Ethernet ports and three USB 3.0 slots.

Users also gain other Synology perks here including its DiskStation software with its user-friendly and responsive interface. Their latest solution also boasts the ability to upgrade its storage capacity even after the device has been set up. This means users can add a new drive and expanding the array without disrupting services or requiring a lengthy manual process.

Besides that, there’s also Synology’s backup and restoration solutions that cover data protection duties for both data resting on external devices and when stored on the DS1821+. This is available through the Package Center which is free of charge.

The DS1821+ also integrates with several backup applications to help safeguard your data from any device. To protect IT infrastructure, there’s Active Backup Suite that provides an efficient and centralized backup from Windows and Linux-based PCs and servers, virtual machines on VMware and Hyper-V hypervisors, and Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 SaaS platforms.

Apart from that, users also benefit from Synology’s Hyper Backup that enables schedulable set-and-forget protection to keep your data backed up to another Synology NAS, a USB drive, Synology C2 cloud storage, and other public cloud providers.

The new Synology DS1821+ NAS will now available from Synology resellers and partners worldwide. According to Synology’s official website, the DS1821+ is designed to reliably store your data and is backed by Synology’s three-year hardware warranty.
