PM: No curfew and elections during Malaysia’s emergency period

During his public address today, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has assured that the emergency declaration isn’t a military coup and there won’t be any curfew imposed. He assured that the Malaysian government is still functioning as usual.

He said the judiciary will still run normally without interference by the government. In terms of the economy, he emphasised that Malaysia is still open for business during the emergency period.

However, all forms of elections including state and by-elections will be put on hold until the emergency declaration ends. The PM has assured that a general election can be held as soon as the COVID-19 situation is over. Malaysia has been recording over 2,000 daily COVID-19 cases for 7 straight days and there are currently more than 28,000 active cases as of yesterday.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has declared an emergency which will be in effect until the 1st of August 2021 or until the current wave of COVID-19 infections is brought down to a more manageable level. Yesterday, the Prime Minister had announced MCO and CMCO for several states and federal territories which will be enforced for two weeks starting from tomorrow, 13th January 2021. During this period, interstate travel is prohibited throughout the country while interdistrict movement is not allowed under MCO areas.

The Prime Minister has urged the public to remain calm during the emergency period. He also called upon all politicians across party lines to be united to manage the pandemic and to strengthen the economy.
