COVID-19: New record high with 3,309 new cases today, active cases exceed 30,000

A day before the new MCO measures take into effect, Malaysia has recorded 3,309 new COVID-19 cases today which brings the total number of infections to 141,533. This is a new record high and it beats the previous record of 3,027 cases on 7th January. There are 4 new deaths reported and the death toll is now 559.

The Ministry of Health has reported 1,469 new recoveries and a total of 110,584 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is now 78.1% while the mortality rate is 0.4%.

There are currently 30,390 active cases remaining which are receiving treatment. 190 are in ICU while 83 require respiratory support.

Out of the 3,309 new cases today, 6 are imported while 3,303 are transmitted locally. Selangor recorded the most with 1,007 new cases, followed by Johor with 442 cases, Sabah with 409 new cases, Kuala Lumpur with 326 cases and Penang with 317 cases.

According to the Ministry of Health, there are 11 new clusters identified today. This include Jalan Manan cluster in Selangor, Persiaran Kuala cluster in Selangor, Udarama cluster in Kuala Lumpur, Iris cluster in Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Kiara cluster in Kuala Lumpur, Dialisis Batu cluster in Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Sekubong cluster in Sarawak, Kampung Badak cluster in Kelantan, Taman Kesedar cluster in Kelantan, Dialisis Putra cluster in Putrajaya and Permint Harmoni cluster in Terengganu.

A total of 77 active clusters have recorded new COVID-19 cases today. The Jalan Harapan prison cluster reported the most with 192 new cases, followed by Teratai cluster with 176 cases and Tembok Choh cluster with 162 cases.

This is the 2nd time Malaysia has recorded more than 3,000 new cases in a day. It’s also the first time Malaysia has accumulated over 30,000 active cases which puts the healthcare system under tremendous pressure. Several states in Malaysia will be placed under MCO and CMCO starting tomorrow, 13th January 2021. During the two-week MCO period, interstate travel is not permitted nationwide.
