COVID-19: 2,232 new cases today, active cases exceed 28,000

Malaysia has recorded 2,232 new COVID-19 cases today which brings the total number of infections to 138,224. There are 4 new deaths reported and the death toll is now 555.

The Ministry of Health has reported 1,006 new recoveries and a total of 109,115 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is now 78.9% while the mortality rate is now 0.4%.

There are currently 28,554 active cases remaining which are receiving treatment. 187 are in ICU while 87 require respiratory support.

Out of the 2,232 new cases today, 6 are imported while 2,226 are transmitted locally. Selangor recorded the most with 557 new cases, followed by Johor with 396 cases, Sabah with 374 cases, Kuala Lumpur with 204 cases and Sarawak with 153 cases.

The Ministry of Health has identified 8 new clusters today. This include Jalan Keluli cluster in Johor, Medan Idaman cluster in Kuala Lumpur, Jelita cluster in Sarawak, Kampung Renok cluster in Kelantan, Kampung Geting cluster in Kelantan, Lumut Barat cluster in Perak, Kubang Bujuk cluster in Terengganu and Kejaya cluster in Terengganu.

A total of 68 active clusters have recorded new cases today. This include Tembok Choh cluster with 157 new cases, Teratai cluster with 83 cases and Beringin cluster with 48 cases.

As announced earlier, the Prime Minister has announced a two-week MCO for Penang, Selangor, Federal Territories (KL, Labuan and Putrajaya), Johor, Sabah and Melaka which will be enforced from 13 January 2021. CMCO has been declared for Kedah, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. Meanwhile, RMCO continues for Sarawak and Perlis. During the two week period, interstate travel is not permitted nationwide.
