Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah has revealed that Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will not cut electricity supply for its domestic users from 1 January to 31 March 2021 for those who have less than 6 months of outstanding payment.

Dr Shamsul said the initiative was announced in cooperation and agreement of TNB and SESB which covers 6.94 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia and 500,000 users in Sabah. To assist consumers, the power utility companies will offer a scheduled instalment payment plan for 6 months from 1st January to 30th June 2021.

For customers that have arrears of more than 6 months, are advised to consult TNB or SESB to make payments in instalments to avoid power cuts. The Minister said that his ministry understands the impact on TNB but they also understand the plight of the people. As a result, they have to take a win-win situation to safeguard TNB’s interest while taking into consideration the needs of the people.

The government has introduced several initiatives to provide discount for electricity usage during the movement control order. Under the PRIHATIN and BPE, about 7.66 million users enjoy electricity discounts between 2-50% depending on usage. Initially offered for 6 months, the discount has been extended until 31st December 2020.
