Galaxy Buds Pro: Key features leaked, including AirPods Pro-like “3D spatial audio”

As multiple leaks have already indicated, Samsung is set to abandon the bean-like design for a more conventional in-ear form-factor for the upcoming Galaxy Buds Pro. The Korean company’s latest audio product is expected to arrive alongside the Galaxy S21, but almost everything you need to know has now been revealed in a leak ahead of launch.

Information was revealed via a new, updated version of Samsung’s Galaxy Buds app, as first reported by 9to5Google. As expected, the Galaxy Buds Pro will feature Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) technology (now with an “Ambient Sound” mode, while you’ll also have options to tweak EQ presets, map touch controls, and use the company’s “Find my Earbuds” feature.

Apparently, the Galaxy Buds Pro will be coming with a feature called “3D spatial audio”, which sounds really similar to Apple’s Spatial Audio feature. This basically emulates a surround sound experience on the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max; on the Galaxy Buds Pro, you’ll be required to pair to a Galaxy phone running Android 11 for this feature to work.

Something that the Buds Pro will have over the AirPods Pro—one of its most direct competitors—is a new “Voice Detect” feature. This basically lowers the volume of audio playback when the Buds detect you speaking, while turning on an audio passthrough mode. The Bixby voice assistant is also available, so this feature might also work in tandem with Samsung’s answer to Google Assistant and Siri.

In essence, this should allow you to stop for a quick conversation, without needing to remove your headphones, or pause playback. Meanwhile, users will also be able to balance audio between right/left earbuds, which might come in handy for users with certain needs. Strangely, this option appears to be hidden by default in the app.

Unfortunately, pricing has yet to be revealed just yet. The Galaxy Buds Live sit at the top of Samsung’s TWS lineup, with a price tag of RM699—so it seems logical that the Galaxy Buds Pro will outstrip that. For now, we’ll have to wait and see, but with what appears to be a full range of features, Samsung’s latest TWS headphones might just be their best yet.
