Huawei Mate 40 Pro+ is the new king of smartphone cameras on DxOMark Mobile

The Huawei Mate 40 series has some of the best cameras on a smartphone to date. DxOMark has recently released their review on Huawei’s latest top-end smartphone, the Mate 40 Pro+ (Pro+) and have awarded it a score of 139. That is three points higher than the previous top phone the Mate 40 Pro (Pro), making it the new smartphone camera king on the DxOMark Mobile ranking.

DxOMark notes that the Pro+ has the highest Photo score (144) they have seen to date. This followed by a Zoom score of 98 and video score of 115, making it a versatile camera that can tackle a variety of subjects.

Though the Pro+ and Pro models share many similar components such as its 6.76″ OLED display and Kirin 9000 chipset, the former has several key differences in its camera hardware that give it an edge.

Even though the Pro+ uses the same 50MP primary sensor as the Pro but it has the added benefit of optical image stabilisation. DxOMark’s review found that still images were excellent offering accurate exposure and wide dynamic range even in challenging high contrast scenes.

DxOMark found the auto white balance system offers a neutral tone though colour casts can occur when shooting in low light. The review also said that autofocus was fast and consistent though it occasionally failed to lock on to close subjects.

It is worth mentioning that, DxOMark found the Pro+ offered superb night shooting and it even achieved its highest score in this category to date. Dynamic range remained wide even when shooting in very low light while texture and noise were well-balanced.

Besides that, DxOMark’s said the 20MP ultra-wide camera on the Pro+ is one of the very best they have tested. It also helps that it has a wider focal length of 14mm compared to the Pro’s 18mm, so users can capture more scenery without having to take a step back.

DxOMark also commended the dual telephoto configuration on the Pro+ that it said improves the top-tier model’s performance over the Pro in the telephoto category. Just to recap, the Pro uses a single telephoto camera that offers 5x magnification. The Pro+ on the other hand uses a 12MP camera with an f/2.4 aperture for capturing images up to 3x magnification. To reach even further it has an 8MP camera with an f/4.4 aperture that offers 10x magnification.

Apart from taking still photos, the Pro+ boasts a great video score of 115 that is just one point shy of the Pro model’s score. According to DxOMark, video captured by the Pro+ offers good exposure, fast autofocus and great camera stabilisation to keep things steady.

DxOMark’s review did not release a separate selfie camera test for the Pro+’s 13MP selfie camera, so there is no score nor a direct comparison with the test it did for the Pro model.

It should be noted that the DxOMark recently announced a new feature to rank smartphones that are only available in the US. What this does it basically hide almost all Chinese phone brands from its listing, including the newly crowned Mate 40 Pro+. Here’s what the current ranking looks like with the toggle set to all regions (left) and USA only (right).
