Leaked Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra spec sheet reveals a sophisticated quad-camera setup

Samsung is kicking off 2021 with its brand new Galaxy S21 series that is expected to be announced as early as 14th January 2021. Ahead of the launch, we now get a better idea of what to expect as reliable leakster Roland Quandt has just shared the full spec sheet of the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is Samsung’s next top-of-the-line flagship that succeeds the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The device comes only in two colours – Phantom Silver and Phantom Black.

The display is slightly smaller at 6.8″ (S20 Ultra: 6.9″) but it still pushes a rather high WQHD+ resolution of 3200×1440 pixels. As seen on the leaked renders, the screen doesn’t seem to curve as much as the previous Galaxy S models. The Dynamic AMOLED 2x display boasts 1600 nits in brightness and it is still capable of pushing 120Hz refresh rate. To preserve battery life, the screen’s high refresh rate is said to be adaptive and it can go as low as 1Hz.

Under the hood, the US market is expected to run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 while in Europe, it will run on Samsung’s very own Exynos 2100 processor. Malaysia and most countries in the Southeast Asian region are also expected to get the Exynos model.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra will be paired with 12GB of RAM but interestingly, the device can be configured with either 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of UFS storage. Unlike the last year’s S20 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra, Samsung will no longer offer the option to expand storage via microSD card.

Samsung is said to be working very hard to address all of its camera issues found on the current Galaxy S20 Ultra. The new flagship phone will still get a huge camera bump but this time it houses a total of 4 cameras with an additional Laser AutoFocus system.

The main 108MP f/1.8 camera uses a large 1/1.33″ sensor with optical image stabilisation and there’s also a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera. The S21 Ultra also feature two telephoto cameras which could take Samsung’s Space Zoom up to a whole new level.

There’s a 10MP f/4.9 periscope telephoto camera that offers 10x optical zoom (240mm) and another 10MP f/2.4 telephoto camera that does 3x optical zoom (72mm). For selfies, the selfie punch-hole camera uses a 40MP shooter which is similar to the S20 Ultra.

This isn’t the first time smartphone manufactures have included two sets of telephoto cameras as Xiaomi and Huawei have tried this configuration before. The top-of-the-line Huawei Mate 40 Pro Plus features an 8MP 10x optical telephoto camera and another 12MP 3x optical telephoto camera. According to Huawei, the combined cameras can provide an equivalent to 17x optical zoom.

In terms of connectivity, you can expect WiFi 6 as well as support for 5G. In case you didn’t know, 5G rollout in Malaysia has been postponed to at least until end of 2022.

The rest of the specs are similar to this year’s S20 Ultra. You still get a large 5,000mAh battery, stereo speakers, ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor, IP68 dust and water resistance, Qi wireless charging and fast wired charging support of up to 45W. The device will run on Android 11 with Samsung One UI 3.1 skin on top.

As reported previously, the Galaxy S21 series will not ship with any chargers or headphones in the box. This has been confirmed for the European market and it is likely to be adopted in other global markets.

So far there are no details on the pricing, but do expect the S21 Ultra to hover around the RM5,000 mark when it goes on sale in Malaysia. The Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G with 128GB storage was launched locally for RM4,999 while the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G with 256GB storage was released for RM5,199. If there’s going to be one Galaxy S21 Ultra version for our local market, we hope that Samsung Malaysia will offer at least 256GB of storage.
