Twitter has compiled a small list of the most popular tweets in Malaysia for 2020. Surprisingly, an “apology” video to do with the popular animated show Upin & Ipin became the most retweeted and liked tweet of this year.
Les’ Copaque—the company behind the popular cartoon Upin & Ipin—tweeted a video containing an ‘apology’ from Fizi, a character of the show, to the twin main characters. It was a response to “something offensive” the character said on the show.
“I want to apologise to Upin and Ipin. I didn’t mean what I said earlier. I got pinched by my mom. I’ve realised my mistake. Don’t be mad at me!” cried Fizi in the video.
The video was posted on 2 June 2020, about a week or so after the start of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Upin and Ipin fans ate it up—some replied to comfort the 3D animated character, but many retweeted and liked the video.
It has since became the most retweeted and liked video in Malaysia for the year. Currently, it has garnered more than 119,000 retweets, and more than 159,000 likes.

Sedih bila melihat keadaan begini tiada kawalan kendiri.

The influential Dr. Noor Hisham also made the list of top tweets with advice to do with SOPs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The advice included staying about 1 meter away from people, to keep wearing masks, and to keep washing your hands. The tweet gained 76,000 retweets and 76,100 likes.
Other notably popular tweets included in the list include this one by @pzullicious where they posted a part of a speech by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin where he acknowledged that there are a few “remixes” of his precious speech that went viral online. The most quote tweeted of the year, however, is by Malaysian artist @alizulfaqqar who designed a simple GIF, intended to be a GIF game.
“We only feature one tweet per account and we don’t consider tweets that offer reward in exchange for followers or retweets,” wrote Twitter in their press release.
The most popular hashtags in Malaysia for the year include #covid19, #dudukrumah, #kitajagakita, #newprofilepic, #itsokaytonotbeokay, #jomkita and #spm2019. The top three had something to do with the pandemic and helped encourage people to “stay at home” and “take care of one another”.
As for what’s going on worldwide, Twitter recently had a field day making fun of the new Apple AirPods Max case. One Twitter user even called it a “butt purse“—whatever that means.
