Ismail Sabri: Interstate travel allowed from 7 December, passenger limit for cars lifted

During today’s National Security Council (NSC) briefing, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced that interdistrict and interstate travel restrictions for CMCO areas will be lifted starting Monday, 7th December 2020. This means Malaysians can soon travel to other states without requiring a permit from the police. However, this excludes areas that are still placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO).

The minister added that there won’t be any police roadblocks at state borders. However, the police will continue to monitor for SOP compliance. This is to ensure high compliance among citizens to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Do note that some state governments may impose their own restrictions and requirements for incoming visitors. It is recommended to consult the respective state health authorities for the latest procedure before making your interstate travel plans.

No more passenger limit for vehicles

In addition, authorities have also lifted the passenger restriction per vehicle. You will be allowed to carry up to the vehicle’s permitted number of occupants. This means 7 people can travel together in a 7-seater MPV.

Ismail Sabri also reminded the public to follow the SOP and to take appropriate measures to reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19. This include taking their own swab tests to protect themselves, their family and the community.

The NSC has also announced a two-week extension of the CMCO in Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor until 20th December 2020. CMCO will end in selected areas tomorrow, 6th December.

Malaysia currently has over 71,000 COVID-19 positive cases in total and there are now 10,775 active cases remaining. Sabah, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur continue to record over 200 new cases today.
