GoPro & PADI’s Underwater Selfie Day is all about saying cheese to save our seas

GoPro have made a name for themselves with their all-purpose action wide-angle cameras—cameras that have been used in a variety of settings such as scuba diving (along with accessories and underwater cases, of course). Now, the company is teaming up with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), the world’s largest diver organisation, to launch the inaugural Underwater Selfie Day.

The aim here is to raise awareness for ocean conservation around the world, to show “millions of people around the world just how incredible [the ocean] really is and why it’s worth protecting”, according to the official statement.

Get involved on 7 November 2020

So, how do you participate? Take an underwater selfie with your GoPro (photos and videos both accepted), and share it over Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter on the 7th of November 2020. Be sure to tag PADI and GoPro’s respective accounts on each platform, and include the #underwaterselfieday hashtag in your post.

If you don’t have access to the ocean right now—perhaps due to COVID-19-enforced restrictions—you can still enter one of your older underwater photos, so long as it was taken with a GoPro camera.

The top post will be chosen based on “performance and style, composition and framing, and overall creativity”. If you win, you’ll walk home with USD 2,000 (~RM8,312), and the new GoPro Hero 9 Black action camera. Meanwhile, two runner-ups will also get a unit of the GoPro Hero 9 Black each. For a full breakdown of the rules and more, click here.

“Participants will also notice that the Hero 9 Black they are vying for is the first GoPro to be sold in plastic-free packaging—one more step we are taking to protect the environment.”

– Rick Loughery, VP of Global Marketing at GoPro

If you’re thinking of taking part in the Underwater Selfie Day, GoPro has also shared some tips to take the best underwater selfies, while reminding that all GoPro cameras are waterproof up to 10m. If you want to dive any deeper, you’ll need to get a separate waterproof housing.
