Serial 1: The latest Harley-Davidson bike is here, and it isn’t a motorcycle

When you think about Harley-Davidson bikes, you picture big, loud, and powerful motorcycles cruising along the highway. However, times are certainly changing, and electric bicycles have grown in popularity as a mode of transport. We’ve seen Ducati and Yamaha release eBikes of their own—and now, Harley-Davidson will be taking the covers off an eBike of their own, under the Serial 1 Cycle brand.

Serial 1 Cycle is a spin-off brand that is still “powered by Harley-Davidson”, and its name is inspired by motorcycle brand’s first ever motorcycle—affectionally known as the “Serial Number One”. Harley-Davidson retains a minority share in Serial 1 Cycle, and venture capitalists own the remainder of the new brand’s equity.

Meanwhile, the brand’s first eBike is set to see an official release sometime in 2021, although they have yet to release full details on the bike. From what we can see, the eBike features leather saddle and grips, along with a sleek-looking black frame. White tyres also give this a vintage look, and the design is supposed to be reminiscent of that very first Harley bike.

Have a look, and judge for yourself:

CNN says that the bike will be powered by a motor mounted on the middle of the bike’s frame, while it will use a belt drive, as opposed to the more conventional metal chain. Additionally, this won’t have a throttle—instead, pedal assist technology will power the bike when a rider pedals. Headlight and taillights are also integrated into the frame, which means that you won’t need to ruin the retro look with any accessories.

Aaron Frank, Brand Director for Serial 1 Cycle, explains:

“Inspired by the entrepreneurial vision of Harley-Davidson’s founders, we hope to once again change how cyclists and the cycling-curious move around their world with a Serial 1 eBicycle.”

The Serial 1 eBike will be available in Spring 2021, although full details will be available on the 16th of November 2020. The eBicycle industry has grown aggressively in recent years with an esimated value of USD 15 billion in 2019 projected to grow at an annual rate of 6 percent from 2020–2025.

Harley-Davidson, for their part, have been through some tough times recently. The company recently announced plans to lay off approximately 700 people, with sales suffering during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, profits have been dropping over the last six years or so.

Perhaps this might be the Harley for you—if you’re looking for one that doesn’t wake up the neighbours, that is. So, what do you think? Let us know in the comments section below. For more information, click here.
