MITI: All operational staff can work normally, 10% rule applies to management in CMCO areas

With Work from Home orders taking into effect at CMCO areas starting tomorrow, 22nd October, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry has provided an infographic for greater clarity. As announced by Azmin Ali, 10% of employees under specific roles will be permitted to work onsite and with reduced hours.

According to MITI, they are allowing 10% of employees from management roles which include accounts, finance, administration, legal, planning and ICT to work at the office. On top of that, their working hours is limited to just 4 hours per day between 10.00am to 2.00pm, for 3 working days per week. That’s equivalent to 12 hours weekly.

MITI’s infographic explained that the 10% quota is only applicable to the management level employees only, not for the entire workforce. The WFH appears to not include operational staff.

In the example provided on Facebook, if a company has 1,000 operational employees and 100 admin, all 1,000 operational employees are permitted to work onsite and they do not need to work from home. However, only 10 out of 100 management employees from the specific roles are allowed to come to the office.

With this example, the company’s workforce is only reduced by 8.2% from 1,100 to 1,010 employees. There’s no example given for smaller companies especially those with less than 10 employees.

So far MITI has yet to mention the need of a COVID-19 swab test for employees that will continue to work onsite. According to Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, a swab test will be required and it will be paid for by PERKESO for contributing employees.
