DxOMark: The Asus ZenFone 7 Pro has the best selfie camera for shooting videos

The Asus ZenFone 7 Pro, just like its predecessor, features a unique swivelling camera mechanism which houses an upgraded triple-camera setup. Besides the novelty factor, this unorthodox design also has one significant benefit over more conventional form-factors: you can use your main cameras to take selfies.

On most smartphones, front-facing cameras don’t offer the same level of quality as main cameras do. You’re also missing out on versatility—most rear camera setups in 2020 feature wide angle lenses, telephoto cameras that offer optical zoom, and even macro shooters for close-up photography.

To measure the performance of the ZenFone 7 Pro’s cameras, the experts over at DxOMark have reviewed the selfie-taking capabilities of Asus’ latest flagship smartphone. The results? If you’re into selfies or vlogging, this is one of the best performing smartphone cameras on the market today.

The ZenFone 7 Pro’s triple-camera setup is made up of a 64MP main camera using a Sony IMX686 sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens that does 3x optical zoom. This main camera setup performs very well for selfies, with an overall DxOMark selfie score of 101 being the second highest selfie score ever awarded (the Huawei P40 Pro tops the list).

Along with a strong bokeh mode performance, DxOMark says that the ZenFone 7 Pro gets the basics right for photography:

“The new ZenFone gets all the basics right for still images, with good exposure in all light conditions, wide dynamic range, and accurate colors with nice skin tones. The camera’s large image sensor helps capture excellent detail and texture for a front camera. Image noise is very well under control on the subject’s face and only visible in the background of a scene.”

Video is where Asus’ unique smartphone excels. With a video selfie score of 96, the ZenFone 7 Pro ranks at the top of DxOMark’s rankings thanks to “excellent texture and detain rendering”. Low-light shots are also good—unlike many other front-facing cameras on other smartphones.

“The Asus [ZenFone 7 Pro] is capable of recording 8K video but its sweet spot, where video image quality is best overall, is at 4K/ 30 fps. Exposure on video clips is accurate down to very light levels of approximately 5 lux where it starts dropping off. This chart shows that in terms of low light video exposure the ZenFone 7 Pro is ahead of both the P40 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.”

The downside to using the main camera for selfies, versus the smaller image sensors that you usually find on regular front-facing cameras, is a narrow depth of field in shots—which can result in slightly blurred backgrounds in group selfies. Skin rendering can be a little unnatural, too, and there is a small amount of noise seen in the background of certain shots.

Regardless, the ZenFone7 Pro’s swivelling camera module means that its selfie performance is one of the best out there today, with excellent results across multiple test categories. Is it a little unfair to compare a rear/main camera setup to selfie cameras (usually housed in notches, cutouts, or pop-up modules) on other smartphones? Perhaps.

Regardless, this means that the ZenFone 7 Pro is one of the best smartphones to recommend to avid vloggers—or those of you who enjoy updating your social feeds with daily OOTDs.
