Huawei Mate 40 series launch happening on 22 October

Huawei will unveil its latest Mate 40 series flagship smartphones a week after Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 event. The Chinese tech giant has revealed its official launch date which is happening on the 22nd of October.

As usual, we expect the Huawei Mate 40 event to be streamed live and it’s taking place at 14:00 CEST, which is at 8pm Malaysian time. Since Malaysia is a key market for Huawei, it is likely that the new flagship devices will come to our market shortly after the global launch.

Due to the ongoing US restrictions, the Mate 40 could be the last smartphone to run on a flagship-class Kirin processor. As revealed by Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu, Huawei would not be able to produce high-end chips after 15th September and the new Kirin 9000 is said to be their last flagship processor. Huawei has been cut off from its key chip supplier, TSMC, due to US trade restrictions. This could also mean that the Mate 40 series might be offered in very limited quantities for the global market.

As revealed by earlier leaks, the Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro are expected to retain a huge round camera bump with a 2×2 camera array. Both devices should support 5G networks in both SA and NSA architecture as standard. In terms of display, it is speculated to feature a fluid 120Hz refresh rate and the new devices will get a wide selfie punch-hole similar to its current P40 series.

Similar to its predecessor, the Mate 30 series, the new Huawei devices will run on Android with Huawei Mobile Services. This means it won’t come with Google apps and services, and you’ll have to use Huawei’s AppGallery to download apps.

If you’re still interested in last year’s model, the Mate 30 series is currently offered from as low as RM1,699 during today’s 10.10 online sale. You can follow our 10.10 live blog for more details.
