Singapore Airlines will let their customers dine and explore an Airbus A380 on 24 and 25 October—all while the aircraft remains parked. For the two days, their plane will be a pop up dining experience called Restaurant A380 @ Changi.
Initially, the airline planned for a “flight to nowhere”—similar to the ones in Qantas and at the Taipei Songshan Airport. However, after the airlines conducted a market study and a review—taking into account factors such as environmental implications and financial viability—they decided not to pursue the idea.
When Singapore Airlines first mentioned their novelty “domestic flights” idea, it attracted negative feedback from people who were concerned about the carbon impact created by these flights. But there are also some who have said that these “flights to nowhere” will help Singapore Airline cope during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There has been a lot of interest in our customer engagement initiatives over the last few weeks, and I would like to thank everyone for their great ideas and suggestions. We are very encouraged by and grateful for the enthusiasm and passion that we have seen,” said Goh Choon Phong, SIA chief executive officer.
Restaurant A380 lets customers explore their A380 double-decker airbus, while have a dining experience in their choice of cabin class. The aircraft will be parked and linked to a gatehold room, so diners can enter like how they would enter a regular plane. Diners will also need airport passes provided by Singapore Airlines as the activity will be in a restricted area.
Diners will be given a showcase of its cabin crew uniform over the years. Those who turn up in traditional heritage wear—such as a sarong kebaya, cheongsam, saree, batik shirt or a kilt—will receive a special gift.
They can pick either classic Singapore Airlines dishes like, or choose from a Peranakan menu, specially designed by Singaporean chef Shermay Lee. The experience also lets you pair your meal with two complimentary alcoholic drinks and a free flow of other beverages.
All health and safety measures will be put in place, including thorough cleaning of the aircraft. Diners will also be seated in groups of no more than five people with safe distancing between them.
If you’re in Singapore and you want to book your dining experience, it will be available at KrisShop.com from 12 October. If you are a KrisFlyer member, you can even redeem your miles when you book it. You can find more information on the dining experience here.
For 5 October, customers can have a First Class or Business Class meal from a range of 10 menus to be delivered to their homes. The meals are designed by four world-renowned chefs on SIA’s International Culinary Panel—Chef Georges Blanc of France, Chef Matt Moran of Australia, Chef Yoshihiro Murata of Japan and Chef Sanjeev Kapoor of India.
Customers will be able to selecting a First Class or Business Class menu, and then choose one of these packages to complete your experience:
The packages also include a First Class or Business Class amenity kit based on a package of their choice. Customers even get to keep limited edition dining ware and amenities like crystal glasses, tableware sets and sleeper suits.
They will get a digital guide on how to heat and plate the dishes. But to really class it up, customers have the option to Book-the-Chef through our cabin crew concierge—a service where a private chef will go to their house to reheat, plate and serve the meal for customers.
SIA@Home is available on KrisShop.com from 5 October. You can also redeem your miles when you book it. Here’s a link if you’d like more information.
For two weekends, Singapore Airlines will be giving guided tours, including activities and curated experiences for all ages. The tour will feature their latest cabin products and a look at their Training Centre.
“Perfect for kids and families, this is a rare opportunity to find out from our pilots and cabin crew what it takes to fly and serve in the skies,” said the airline.
Customers can also have the option to add additional activities like the junior cabin crew experience, a flight simulator training session, learn about Singapore Airlines’ wines, learn how to achieve the Singapore Girl look in a guided grooming workshop, and dine at their canteen which will be serving in-flight cuisines. But you’ll need to pay extra for those.
The tour dates are set for 21, 22, 28 and 29 November, and bookings commence from 1 November at KrisShop.com. Miles are also redeemable here, but do visit this link for more information.
“These experiences offer something for everyone —from frequent flyers who miss our world-class in-cabin products and service, to couples and families who want an exclusive dining experience, and parents who are after an enjoyable activity-filled day with their children during the school holidays,” said Goh.
