CEO: OnePlus 8T to come with “flexible” display panel, 120Hz refresh rate

The OnePlus 8T is set to launch on the 14th of October 2020, and rumours have abounded on the upcoming flagship from the company. Most notably, leaked information has indicated that we’ll be seeing a 120Hz refresh rate, and a redesigned camera bump (it’s more Samsung-like, now).

Now, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed to Tech Radar that the new smartphone will feature a 6.55″ fluid display with a 120Hz refresh rate—the same size as the OnePlus 8’s screen, but with a higher refresh rate. In fact, this is the first time that 120Hz will be seen on a non-“Pro” model for OnePlus, although we might not actually see a Pro version this year.

What’s also interesting is that the OnePlus 8T will feature a 2.5D “flexible” panel, a first for a OnePlus device. Benefits include a higher maximum brightness, Lau explained:

“Compared to regular panels, the 2.5D flexible screen offers an improved light permeability and can reach a maximum brightness of up to 1100 nits.”

This has also resulted in a screen-to-body ratio of 91.9 percent, with slimmer bezels and an overall larger-looking screen. Additionally, Lau claims that the OnePlus 8T’s display will have “the highest colour accuracy possible across the industry”. This means that details and colours displayed as close to real-life as possible, essentially.

“With technology evolving and manufacturing technology improving, we are able to bring 120Hz to a wider range of our products, providing the best-in-class display technology and experience to even more people.”

Unfortunately, OnePlus didn’t confirm whether a Pro version is coming or not. We’ve heard rumours that an Ultra version will come instead, possibly taking the Pro’s place at the top of the range. In any case, we don’t have to wait much longer, with the launch set to take place on the 14th of October 2020.
