Sony PlayStation 5: Here are 5 games to look forward to

Sony has recently revealed the pricing and availability of its next-generation PlayStation 5 (PS5). The highly anticipated is set for a global launch on 19 November with the PlayStation 5 priced at USD499.99 while the Digital Edition will retail for USD399.99.

Though there is no local price announced, we expect the Digital Edition to retail below RM2,000 based on Sony’s pricing across the different regions. While we still do not know whether Malaysia will be among the first countries to get the PS5 on launch day.

With that being said, here are some games we can look forward to playing when the PS5 launches and a few to look forward to in 2021. Without further ado, let’s jump right to it.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales

Many PlayStation fans were stoked to see Insomniac Games’ next-generation take on the iconic superhero when Sony announced it back in June. After all Marvel’s Spider-Man, released back in 2018, offered gamers one of the best videogame depictions of the web-slinger.

As the title of the game suggests, the focus is on the titular Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker. If you are unfamiliar who Miles is, just check out the movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse to get caught up on on the spunky Afro-Latino teenager’s backstory.

Judging from the trailer Sony showed, the game’s combat is set to be fast and fluid much like the 2018 game. There doesn’t seem to be any shortage of action-packed moments as Miles desperately does all he can to save every innocent civilian from harm even as the bridge they stand on collapses

Sony says the game is a standalone title that is similar to Uncharted: Log Legacy rather than a full on sequel. The game is also coming to the PS4 but one benefit the PS5 has is the ability to instantly fast-travel across the city with almost zero load times thanks to the next-gen console’s super fast SSD.

Final Fantasy XVI

No PlayStation games list is complete without a Final Fantasy title. Sony knew the reveal of the next numbered game in the long-running RPG series will get everyone’s attention when it opened the PS5 event with the game’s trailer.

Unlike 2016’s Final Fantasy XV, the game is returning to a more medieval setting that is reminiscent of the series’ classic roots. From the trailer alone, the game looks like it combines the political intrigue of Final Fantasy XII with the aesthetics of the series online entries i.e. Final Fantasy XIV. It also looks like developer Square Enix is sticking to a real-time battle system that is reminiscent of the previous game and the recent Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Final Fantasy XVI will not be a launch title and is set for a 2021 release date. Though the game was initially stated to be also available for the PC, both Sony and Square Enix denied this after the event.

Demon’s Souls

Soul-crushing games with massive killer bosses, set in foreboding dark medieval settings can trace their origins back to this game, Demon’s Souls. Released back in 2009 on the PS3, this granddaddy of the Souls genre is getting proper remastered treatment by developers Bluepoint Games.

The PS5 version of the game significantly updates the game’s visuals but retains its notorious difficulty level. The designer’s intention was to evoke the spirit of classic games of yesteryear while providing a sense of challenge and accomplishment for players. If you are not familiar with Demon’s Souls, you play a nameless hero brought to the fog covered kingdom of Boletaria to kill its fallen King Allant and pacify the Old One.

Like Final Fantasy XVI, Demon’s Souls’ PC release was retracted shortly after Sony’s presentation. The Verge learned that the information at the end of the trailer stating there was a PC release was actually an error, making the game genuinely a PS5 exclusive.

God of War: Ragnarok

There is no denying that Sony’s 2018 God of War reboot is one of the best games of the last console generation. After two years of silence, gamers will finally get to set on a new adventure that continues the tale of Kratos and his son, Atreus.

The teaser trailer shown at the very end of Sony’s virtual event was definitely one of the key highlights of the show even though it doesn’t tell us much. Only one line of dialogue is spoken, featuring the gravelly voice of Kratos’ performer Christopher Judge saying, “You must prepare yourself.”

Indeed, gamers will have to another year to prepare themselves for the coming of Ragnarok (the end of days in Norse mythology). Sony is definitely banking on this game to sell more PS5s in 2021.

Sackboy A Big Adventure

Now for something completely different. The charming LittleBigPlanet has been a staple of Sony’s PlayStation lineup. The titular Sackboy has become a sort of unofficial mascot for the makers of the PlayStation. Now the cloth-covered star is breaking out to star in his very own game.

Sackboy’s PS5 outing marks a departure from the other games in the series. Now he is able to explore a fully 3D world instead of the traditional 2.5D platforming levels the series is known for. The game supports up to four players co-operative play, making it a good choice for those who want to play with friends and family.

Sony has confirmed that the game will also be available on the PS4 but if you want to experience the game with prettier graphics you should go for the PS5 version.
