The launch of DJI’s new Ronin gimbal has been postponed

Just last month, DJI shared a teaser that seemingly indicated that a new Ronin gimbal—possibly named the Ronin-RS2 or the Ronin-S2—would be announced on the 9th of September 2020. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, the upcoming release is expected to be a successor to the DJI Ronin-S, although leaked information suggests that it will be called the DJI Ronin-RS2.

Before we delve into the bad news, here’s the original teaser:

As you can see, DJI didn’t really give too much away in the Tweet. What it did reveal was that the announcement pertained to a Ronin model, and that the announcement would happen on the 9th of September 2020.

However, the drone specialists then tweeted a new image that confirms that we will see two variants within the new Ronin series—a Ronin-RS2 and a Ronin-S2, perhaps? There’s also an October 2020 date stated in the Tweet, along with the text: “Why settle for one?”

And now, DJI has shared a reminder on its official Twitter page to users who may have missed it: “Wake me up when September ends.” In a thread, the company also explains that the 9 September announcement has been rescheduled to October 2020—while promising that there will be “two incredible new options” in gimbal technology.

Not much is known yet regarding either model, although the gimbal on the left of the image has a carbon fibre finish, along with a bright red stripe along the edge of the gimbal; the option on the right looks plain in comparison, with a matte black finish. Perhaps we’ll see a “pro” version alongside a more affordable option—but it’s purely speculation at this juncture.

So, the gist of it is this. Set your calendars for October (the exact date hasn’t been revealed just yet) for a new pair of DJI Ronin gimbals! DJI didn’t explain the reasoning behind the postponement, but an educated guess would be that the COVID-19 pandemic has played a part.
