Philips TAT1215: TWS headphones that don’t cost a bomb

Philips has announced a new pair of TWS headphones, the TAT1215. Putting aside that interesting and memorable name, the Philips TAT1215 offers quite a bit for what it’s priced at. That includes some decent specs—although at the affordable end of the TWS headphone market, there is certainly a lot of competition.

Regardless, if you’re in the market for something that’s affordable and functional, Philips’ new TWS headphones might just be an interesting option to consider. Ready? Here’s what you need to know.

Price and availability

Two colours are available: Black and White versions. However, you’ll be able pick up the headphones for a heavily discounted price of RM179 during a one-day flash sale on the 9th of September 2020, so it might be worth waiting till then if you’re keen.

Specs

One of the first things to consider when looking for a pair of wireless headphones is, of course, the battery performance. Philips promises up to 18 hours of music playback—although that includes two charges from the charging case. On the earbuds themselves, you’ll be able to get up to six hours of music playback.

You won’t be able to take the TAT1215 swimming, although a IPX4 water resistance rating means that you won’t need to worry if you sweat heavily during workouts, or if you want to lightly wash the headphones.

So, what about the sound? Philips says that 6mm neodymium drivers ensure a combination of “crystal clear sound” and “punchy bass”, while acoustic echo cancellation should help with better quality calls. However, I won’t comment much on audio quality for now—like all headphones, we’ll need to get our hands on an actual unit to make a judgement.

The rest of the specs are pretty straightforward. You can charge the case via USB-C, and there’s obviously no wireless charging at this price point. Meanwhile, there are physical buttons on the earbuds for controls, along with support for Google Assistant and Siri voice assistants.

So, what do you think? At the discounted price of RM179, I’d say that these could be a steal. Obviously, sound quality could change my thinking, but from first impressions, these offer decent battery life for an affordable price. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
