COVID-19: New cases drop to 5 today, all 3 local cases reported in Melaka

Malaysia records 5 new COVID-19 cases today which brings the total number of infections to 9,296. There are no new deaths reported and the death toll remains at 125.

The Ministry of Health has reported 16 new recoveries and a total of 8,994 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is now at 96.75% while the mortality rate is at 1.34%.

There are currently 177 active cases remaining which are isolated and receiving treatment. 8 patients are in ICU and 6 require respiratory support.

Out of the 5 new cases today, 2 are imported while 3 are transmitted locally. The imported cases consist of Malaysians returning from the Philippines and Egypt.

The 3 local cases are all reported in Melaka. 2 cases were detected during pre-surgery screening and another was detected via symptomatic screening. There are no new cases reported from active clusters.

At the moment, the Bukit Jalil Immigration Detention Depot cluster has 653 positive cases, followed by 73 positive cases from the Tawar cluster and 45 positive cases from the Sivagangga cluster.

The Ministry of Health has updated that the Tawar cluster contains a mutated D614G strain. According to the Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, there’s a possibility that the Tawar and Sivagangga cluster are linked to the same source.

The National Security Council has announced that Targeted Enhanced Movement Control Order (TEMCO) will be enforced at Aman Jaya, Sungai Petani in Kedah from 12.01am on 28th August until further notice. This will cover 265 homes from 3 zones (Kenanga, Melur and Mawar).

Residents are not allowed to leave while outsiders are not permitted to enter the TEMCO area. Employers must allow affected employees to work from home and police permission is required if there’s a need to go out due to an emergency.
