Facebook will merge Messenger and Instagram chat in one

You’ll soon be able to talk to your Facebook and Instagram friends in one platform. Instagram has reportedly been updated to offer an option that merges its chat feature with Facebook Messenger.

Instagram users will be notified to join their accounts with Facebook Messenger. However, I have yet to receive the notification. Both Facebook Messenger and the chat feature on Instagram are still separate for iOS and on Android in Malaysia—but it is expected to roll out soon.

The updates brings chats and features from Facebook Messenger to Instagram. The company added options that were previously available on Messenger like colourful chats, reactions with any emoji, and swiping to reply to individual messages.

Although their new update looks a lot more like Facebook Messenger, it’s still surprisingly not possible to message Facebook users from Instagram. But it is likely to be enabled soon.

You can even decline the update if you wanted to. However the notification on Instagram will tell you that even if you don’t update, you will still “receive message requests from Facebook accounts”.

Facebook plans to eventually unify the messaging platforms of the apps they own—which includes WhatsApp as well. With the eventual ‘all-in-one’ merge, Mark Zuckerberg had also stated that he wants the system to be end-to-end encrypted.

This new update isn’t the only recent addition for Instagram. Instagram announced their TikTok rival Reels—which helps you create and discover short videos on their platform. This feature, like the new messaging update, has yet to roll out in Malaysia as well.
